AN EVENING OF CUBAN CULTURE: ruth behar and umi vaughan

Ruth BeharOn Thursday, May 9 at 7 pm, please join us for music and a discussion regarding Cuban culture, featuring Ruth Behar and Umi Vaughn. Doors open at 6:30. Donations are gratefully accepted, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Ruth Behar, an anthropologist, poet, storyteller, filmmaker, and professor at the University of Michigan, will speak on the topic “Cuba: You Can Go Home Again”.

Ruth will also be bringing books from Cuba’s innovative publishing project Ediciones Vigia which she has collected over the years. Copies of her new book Traveling Heavy (Duke University Press, 2013) will be available for sale that evening.

Umi VaughanUmi Vaughan, an anthropologist, author, professor, and musician, will perform Afro-Cuban Bata drumming and speak about his experiences in Cuba working with the Fernando Ortiz Foundation in Havana. For more information go to
