DIEGO DELEO AND FRIENDS: the poet next door

It is with humility and great joy that we host an evening of readings by Diego Deleo and friends on Wednesday, October 8th at 7pm.

When Diego Deleo found out he was being evicted from the North Beach house he’s lived in for 30+ years, he told me all he wanted was to have a reading in his house with a few friends. We did just that, and it was unforgettable. That link will tell you the remarkable story of how I met Diego and also contains videos from that evening.

You can also listen to a story KALW did on Diego.

Since that night, Diego—who has only been writing poetry for two years now, at almost 80 years old—has started attending many local readings and has made many friends in the process. He takes a walk through the neighborhood every day, and brings parcels of strawberries and mixed nuts to his friends and local businesses.

Come celebrate and delight in the presence of a North Beach treasure in the warmth of our modest walls.

It will be a casual night, with Diego reading some poems and all who attend being free to do the same. Delicious food and drinks will be provided.

You are free to bring friends, and to make new ones.
