FLAMENCO DEL ORO: incendiary music and dance

The Emerald Tablet is very pleased to welcome back Flamenco Del Oro, a flamenco music and dance troupe with attitude and spirit delivering syncopated and sensual rhythms made with passionate guitar, intoxicating vocals, and fiery beautiful dancing.

Join us Friday July 19th, 8-10 pm for another unforgettable performance with Flamenco del Oro and very special guests. Admission is $10 suggested donation for the performers, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Red and white wine, Solera and complimentary food will be available. Ole’!

This month’s flamenco presentation feature Bay Area singer and dancer flamenco legend Roberto Zamora, Flamenco del Oro’s guitarist Gopal Slavonic, Mission Flamenca dancers Gina Giammanco and Sandra Durand.

Roberto ZamoraRoberto Zamora has been a performer of flamenco song and dance for 35 years. He is a well-known and welcome guest at regional festivals in Andalusia, southern Spain, where he has immersed himself for many years in Andalusian culture and its gypsy flamenco heartbeat. Roberto’s style and knowledge has been inspired through close association with flamenco legends “La Fernanda” and “La Bernarda,” Pepe Rios, “Anzonini del Puerto,” “el Funi,” Agustín Rios, and Juan del Gastor and the gypsies of Morón de la Frontera. He has performed in Spain with Juan del Gastor, in Canada and throughout the U.S. with various companies, among them La Tania Flamenco Music and Dance, La Monica Pasión Flamenca, Rosa Montoya Bailes Flamencos, and is an active member of Yaelisa’s Caminos Flamencos.

Gopal SlavonicGopal Slavonic trained at the prestigious ‘Fundacion de Arte Flamenco Cristina Heeren’ in Sevilla, Spain where he studied intensively with leading flamenco guitarists Miguel Angel Cortez, Jose Postigo, Antonio Carmona, Eduardo Rollabar, Tino Van Der Sman, and Joselito Galvez. In his 18 years of dedication to flamenco guitar, Gopal has returned to Spain to further his studies several times, most frequently to Jerez de la Frontera. He has performed with flamenco artists including Kina Mendez, Kerensa Demars,Cerro Negro, La Fibi, Mark Taylor, La Carola, Roberto Zamora, Pilar Moreno, Zahara, and Jose Galvez. Gopal recently released his second CD ‘Dos Orillas’ and is the featured guitarist for Northern California’s Flamenco del Oro.

Gina GiammancoGina Giammanco began her dance training in New York City at various professional dance schools including Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey. At 18 she performed with Clive Thompson Dance Company and taught in his school. Always fascinated by complex rhythm structures, she became inspired by flamenco. Shortly after moving to San Francisco she began to study this art form there and abroad in Spain. For the past 9 years she has performed with Bay Area companies including La Tania’s Aljibe, Flametal, Caminos Flamencos, and Riquezas. She is currently part of local flamenco group Mision Flamenca. In 2003 she performed with Madrid based company Noche Flamenca with Soledad Bario and Isabel Bayon. In 2010 she performed with LaTania’s company in the Los Angeles Flamenco Festival. Gina performed as a soloist and company member in La Tania’s Despertar es un Color, which was nominated for a Isadora Duncan award for best company performance for 2012.

Sandra DurandSandra Durand was born in Lima, Peru. When she was 6 years old she started dancing Afro-Peruvian and ballet. In 2001 Sandra moved to San Francisco where she continued her studies in dance exploring the different styles of dance such as Samba, Belly Dance, Afro Haitian and Flamenco. In 2006 Sandra decided to dedicate herself full time to Flamenco and began to study with La Tania. She also took special workshops with Concha Vargas, El Funi, Cihtli Ocampo, Juan Siddi, El Farru, Clara Rodriguez, Jose Maya, Javier Heredia and Juana Amaya. After 4 years of studying with La Tania Sandra became her assistant teacher. She taught Flamenco to Elementary School children and Beginning level for La Tania’s school. Sandra has performed in La Tania’s events such as “Fiesta Flamenca”, 2009-10, “Noche de Tablao” in 2010 and City Dance On Stage in 2011. Currently, she is still studying flamenco with La Tania and Clara Rodriguez. She joined Mision Flamenca as a dancer at the beginning of 2013.
